For Joep , great goalkeeping starts with speed and insight. His reaction time is one of his greatest assets. As he puts it: "My reaction time is one of my strongest points. I can react quickly to shots and unexpected balls, which allows me to make crucial saves."

But it’s not just about reflexes. Thanks to his sense of positioning, he often knows how to intervene before a situation escalates. "By moving with the attackers, I can often cut off high or deep balls early," he explains. This makes it much harder for opponents to create real scoring chances.

The role of communication and leadership

In modern hockey, the goalkeeper is also a leader. Joep sees communication as an essential part of his game. "I am constantly coaching my defense, whether we are playing zone or man-to-man," he says. By giving continuous instructions and maintaining an overview, he provides structure and calm to the defense, especially during high-pressure moments.

Focus and mentality under pressure

Goalkeeping requires not only physical skills but also mental toughness. Joep combines courage with perseverance and always stays focused. "I’m not afraid of the ball and I always stay sharp, even when the game changes quickly," he says. By reading situations well and anticipating the play, he can intervene earlier and position his team better.

Penalty corners as a specialty

Penalty corners are often decisive, and that is a clear focus for Joep. He analyzes opponents extensively and develops his own plan. "I look at running lines, speed, and potential variations like slips or rebounds," he explains. During execution, he relies on his technique and preparation. His greatest strength is clearly evident here: "My biggest strength is that I can stop penalty corners on my stick side with a fully extended leg."

The impact of the right goalkeeping gear

Since October 2022, Joep has been playing with goalkeeping gear from The Indian Maharadja, specifically from the Storm line. According to him, this has visibly improved his game. "The thickness and width of the protection allow me to stay on my line longer and react faster," he says. The confidence the equipment provides is crucial: "I can go all-out for every ball without fear of pain."

The Storm kickers, Storm leg guards, and Storm helmet, in particular, make the difference for him. About the kickers, he says: "Because of their sturdiness, I dare to stay on my feet longer and can make many saves." The leg guards provide extra presence, according to him: "They give me a big appearance in the goal, which helps in one-on-one situations." And the helmet? That is essential for him: "My helmet has already stopped many hard balls, and that gives me a lot of confidence."

Ambitions and the future

Joep has clear goals in mind. In the short term, he wants to reach the national championship final with Oranje-Rood U18-1. At the same time, he is looking further ahead. "My ultimate dream is to play in a Hoofdklasse Men's 1 team and become the starting goalkeeper there," he says. In addition, he wants to continue developing and hopes to return to the Dutch U18 national team, with the ultimate goal of playing at the highest level.
