Interview: Pirmin Blaak on The Indian Maharadja's Goalie line

You have been playing at the highest level for years. What do you consider the most important qualities of top-tier goalkeeping gear?

For me, the most important thing is being well-protected, even at the highest speeds. You shouldn't be in pain while goalkeeping. With the new Stormcollection, I haven't had to worry about that for years. It allows me to move freely without fear. With previous brands, I often had pain in my feet, for example, and that affects your game. You need to feel completely free to go all out.

You play with the Stormline yourself, the high-performance range from The Indian Maharadja. What do you notice immediately in your game when you play with this gear?

The gear is truly contoured to the body, which makes moving easier. At the same time, you have maximum surface area for goalkeeping. That combination of freedom of movement and maximum coverage ensures you play more efficiently and with more confidence.

The Stormline stands for maximum protection and control. How important is that combination for you during top-level matches?

I value protection more than comfort. A goalkeeper's outfit is never one hundred percent perfect. The most important thing is that you are well-protected. There are brands that offer more comfort but less protection. I will always choose protection, because ultimately, that is what determines your performance.

For top goalkeepers, everything is about the details. Which specific features of your gear really make the difference for you in the circle?

For me, the difference is mainly in the thickness of the kickers, which you use to clear rebounds and protect yourself. In addition, the goalkeeper pants are very important, because you take a lot of balls on your joints there. If you are well-protected in those areas, you feel safe. From that sense of security comes comfort, and from comfort, your performance grows.

As an ambassador, you are involved with the brand. How do you use your experience to improve and develop the goalie line?

I have been closely involved in the development of The Indian Maharadja's goalie line. I bring my experiences from the field, but also from GoalieWorks, where we train over 900 goalkeepers every week. From the youngest youth players to seniors. That combination of elite and grassroots sports provides valuable insights. This is how we develop products that work not just for the pros, but for all goalkeepers.

Within the collection, you have different levels such as Rise, Sky en Storm. Why do you think it is important for goalkeepers to play with the right line that matches their level?

The most important thing is to choose the right foam thickness that suits your level. In the beginning, the speed of shots is lower and it is more about agility. As you grow, you also take on more protection. Choosing maximum protection too early is like a young player using a stick with too much carbon. You lose feel. So, you have to grow into your protection, step by step.

You have reached the absolute pinnacle of the hockey world. What advice would you give young goalkeepers regarding their development and choosing the right equipment?

My advice to young goalkeepers is to mentally embrace the position. You can truly make the difference in a match. You are a crucial link in the team. Focus on that responsibility and the positive aspects of it.

In terms of equipment: choose colors that suit you, choose the right level of protection, and ensure the agility matches your age. Don't go for the highest level too quickly. If your gear is too stiff, it can hinder your motor development. Grow into it along with your game.
