What is the secret behind such a rapid rise in the world rankings? According to Gentzsch, it’s all about effort and mentality: “I try to give 110% every day and focus entirely on the things within my own control. No complaining about what I can’t influence. At a certain point, I got into a rhythm and just kept going.”

Fifteen wins in a row and a boost in confidence

With titles at both an M15 and M25 tournament and an impressive streak of fifteen consecutive wins, not only did his ranking grow, but so did his confidence. Yet, Gentzsch remains grounded: “Honestly, my mindset isn’t very different. It felt more like a reward for all the hard work over the past few months. It mainly showed me that anything is possible. Last week in Genoa, I was even on the verge of beating a top 30 player.”

Learning from the world’s best

During a Challenger tournament in Genoa, Gentzsch played an exciting match against Luciano Darderi, ranked 30th in the world. Although he lost narrowly, he looks back on it positively: “It was a great challenge to see what the absolute elite are doing and what I can still improve. After the match, I discussed with my coaches what I need to work on to reach that level as well. I now have concrete things to address, and that is incredibly motivating.”

The balance between training and tournaments

Success doesn’t just come from playing matches, but also from finding the right balance. Gentzsch explains how he handles that: “Usually, I play a two-to-three-week block of tournaments, followed by a week of training. Sometimes I take a few days of rest then. This schedule has worked well for me for a few years, and I’m going to stick with it for now.”

Looking ahead: goals and development

With his current ranking around 265th in the world, Gentzsch mainly wants to maintain his level over the coming months. “I’ll be losing some points soon, so my goal is to win those back and stay around the 270 mark. In terms of my game, I mainly want to become more consistent in my shots and keep working with a specific plan.”
