A goalkeeper who reads the game

For Joep, being a good goalkeeper starts with speed and awareness. His reaction speed is one of his greatest assets. As he puts it: "My reaction speed is one of my strongest points. I can react quickly to shots and unexpected balls, which allows me to make important saves."

But it’s not just about reflexes. Thanks to his sense of positioning, he’s often able to intervene early. “By moving with the attackers, I can often cut off high or deep balls early on,” he explains. This makes it much harder for opponents to create real scoring chances.

The Role of Communication and Leadership

In modern field hockey, the goalkeeper is also a leader. Joep therefore sees communication as an essential part of his game. "I’m constantly coaching my defense, whether we’re playing zone defense or man-to-man," he explains. By constantly giving instructions and maintaining an overview, he brings structure and calm to the defense, especially when the pressure is high.

Focus and mindset under pressure

Goalkeeping requires not only physical skills but also mental strength. Joep combines courage with perseverance and always stays focused. "I'm not afraid of the ball and always stay alert, even when the game changes quickly," he says. By reading the situation well and anticipating the play, he can intervene sooner and better position his team.

Penalty corners as a specialty

Penalty corners are often decisive, and that’s where Joep places a clear focus. He analyzes opponents in detail and devises his own strategy. “I look at running paths, speed, and possible variations like slips or rebounds,” he explains. During execution, he relies on his technique and preparation. His greatest strength is clearly evident here: "My greatest strength is that I can stop penalty corners on my stick side with my leg fully extended."

The importance of the right goalkeeper gear

Since October 2022, Joep has been playing in The Indian Maharadja goalkeeper gear from the Storm line. He says it has visibly improved his game. "Thanks to the thickness and width of the padding, I can stay on my line longer and react faster," he explains. The confidence the gear provides is crucial: "I can go all out for every ball without fear of pain."

Speaking about the kickers, he says: "Because they're so sturdy, I feel confident staying on my feet longer and making lots of saves." He believes the leg guards give him an extra presence: "They make me look imposing in goal, which helps in one-on-one situations." And the helmet? That’s essential for him: “My helmet has already stopped a lot of hard shots, and that gives me a lot of confidence.”

Ambitions and the Future

Joep has clear goals in mind. In the short term, he wants to reach the national championship final with Oranje-Rood JO18-1. At the same time, he’s looking further ahead. “My ultimate dream is to play for a Men’s Hoofdklasse 1 team and become the starting goalkeeper there,” he says. He also wants to continue developing his skills and hopes to return to the Dutch U18 national team, with the ultimate goal of playing at the highest level.
