Interview: Pirmin Blaak on the Goalie Line from *The Indian Maharadja*

Pirmin Blaak is one of the most successful goalies in hockey history. As a former goalie for the Dutch national team, he won Olympic gold in Paris 2024. He now plays for Braxgata in Belgium and, at the age of 38, is still active at the top level. As an ambassador for The Indian Maharadja’s goalie line, he was also closely involved in the development of this collection. In this interview, Pirmin shares his insights on goalie equipment, performance, and the development of the various lines.

You've been playing at the highest level for years. What do you consider to be the most important features of top-tier goalkeeper gear?

For me, the most important thing is that you’re well protected, even at top speeds. You shouldn’t feel any pain while playing goalkeeper. Thanks to the new Storm collection, I haven’t had any issues with that for years. It lets me move freely without any worries. With previous brands, for example, I often had pain in my feet, and that affects your game. You need to feel completely free to give it your all.

You play with the Storm line—The Indian Maharadja’s high-performance line. What do you notice right away in your game when you play with this equipment?

The gear is truly contoured to the body, making it easier for you to move. At the same time, you have maximum surface area for goalkeeping. That combination of freedom of movement and maximum coverage allows you to play more efficiently and with greater confidence.

The Storm line stands for maximum protection and control. How important is that combination to you during top-level competitions?

I value protection more than comfort. A goalkeeper’s uniform is never 100 percent perfect. The most important thing is that you’re well protected. There are brands that offer more comfort but less protection. In that case, I always choose protection, because that’s ultimately what determines your performance.

For top goalkeepers, it's all about the details. What specific features of your equipment really make a difference for you in the circle?

For me, the main difference lies in the thickness of the shin guards, which help you block rebounds and protect yourself. In addition, goalkeeper pants are very important, because you catch a lot of balls around your joints. If you’re well-protected there, you feel safe. That sense of safety leads to comfort, and comfort leads to improved performance.

As an ambassador, you’re involved with the brand. How do you use your experience to help improve and develop the goalie line?

I’ve been closely involved in the development of The Indian Maharadja’s goalkeeper line. I draw on my experience from the field, as well as from GoalieWorks, where we train more than 900 goalkeepers every week—from the youngest youth players to seniors. That combination of elite-level play and recreational sports provides valuable insights. This allows us to develop products that work not only for elite players, but for all goalkeepers.

Within the collection, there are different tiers, such as Rise, Sky, and Storm. Why do you think it’s important for goalkeepers to play with the right line that matches their skill level?

The most important thing is to choose the right foam thickness for your skill level. In the beginning, your shot speed is lower and the focus is more on agility. As you improve, you’ll need more protection. Opting for maximum protection too early is similar to using a stick with too much carbon as a young player—you lose feel. So you need to increase your protection gradually, step by step.

You've reached the very top of the hockey world. What advice would you give to young goalies when it comes to their development and choosing the right equipment?

My advice to young goalkeepers is to embrace the role mentally. You can really make a difference in a game. You’re a crucial part of the team. Focus on that responsibility and the positive aspects of it.

When it comes to equipment: choose colors that suit you, select the right level of protection, and make sure the flexibility is appropriate for your age. Don’t rush to the highest level too quickly. If your gear is too stiff, it can hinder your motor development. Let your equipment evolve along with your game.
